Overview

It is a legal requirement for teachers applying for an ELT permit in Malta to obtain a pass in the Spoken English Proficiency Test for Teachers (SEPTT).

The SEPTT is designed to ensure high levels of spoken English proficiency amongst English Language Teaching (ELT) practitioners working in a variety of international contexts.

SEPTT tests candidates’ ability to use spoken English for a variety of functions, including conversing, explaining, presenting information, and giving instructions and feedback in a context specific to ELT. SEPTT is divided into three tasks and takes no longer than 15 minutes.

What you'll get

The candidates will receive a certificate, which, together with an MQF Level 4 qualification in English (such as A Levels with grades A, B, or C) or a Test for English Language Teaching (TELT) certificate, and a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate or an International Certificate at MQF Level 5 or higher in English Language Teaching from an ELT Council-approved institution, makes them eligible to apply for the regular ELT permit, which will be valid for four years.

Eligibility

Applicants will need to have successfully completed a methodology course (e.g. TEFL Cert.) before they sit for the test.

How to apply

The applicant must fill out the online application form for SEPTT and pay the administrative fee.
