Overview

Psychotherapy helps people who have difficulties on an emotional and behavioural level. Through psychotherapy, the person can identify and change these emotions, thoughts, and behaviours with the aim of living a better quality of life. The psychotherapy service can help senior citizens in Residential Homes as well as in the community to address issues that may be contributing to emotional difficulties.

What you'll get

The service includes:

  • Individual sessions to clients living within Residential Homes as well as clients living in the community (depending on the presenting complaint).
  • Group sessions to clients living within Residential Homes as well as clients living in the community (depending on the presenting complaint).

Senior citizens in the community may be asked to attend these sessions in one of our community clinics located in Żurrieq, Birkirkara and Mtarfa, depending on the locality where they live.

Eligibility

Clients referred for this service need to fall under all the following criteria:
•    Senior citizens over 60 years of age.
 

CRITERIA FOR REFERRAL

Possible reasons for referral to psychotherapeutic interventions include:

  • Difficulties in adjusting to:
    • A new physical condition;
    • Receiving a new diagnosis;
    • Being admitted to a residential home;
    • Life after loss / Bereavement.
  • Constant feelings of anxiety, sadness or helplessness;
  • Lack of interest and / or focus in carrying out daily activities;
  • Drastic or sudden changes in eating and / or sleeping patterns.

The consent of the guardian must be obtained in cases where there is severe cognitive impairment, and one needs to note that such cases might not benefit from this service.
