The Contributory Retirement Grant for Non-Pensioners is paid to a person registered under the Social Security Act (Cap. 318.), but does not have the minimum amount of Social Security Contributions to qualify for a Contributory Pension.

The payment of the Grant is based on the number of Social Security Contributions paid by the person registered under the Social Security Act (Cap. 318.).

• Six-hundred euro (€600)is awarded to a person who has paid between fifty (50) to ninty-nine (99) contributions.

• Six-hundred and fifty euro (€650) is awarded to a person who has paid between one-hundred (100)to one-hundred and forty-nine (149) contributions.

• Seven-hundred euro (€700) is awarded to a person who has paid between one-hundred and fifty (150) to one-hundred and ninety-nine (199) contributions.

• Seven-hundred and fifty euro (€750) is awarded to a person who has paid between two-hundred (200) to two-hundred and forty-nine (249) contributions.

• Eight-hundred and fifty euro (€850) is awarded to a person who has paid between two-hundred and fifty (250)to two-hundred and ninety-nine (299) contributions.

• Nine-hundred euro (€900) is awarded to a person who has paid between three-hundred (300)to three-hundred and forty-nine (349) contributions.

• Nine-hundred and fifty euro (€950) is awarded to a person who has paid between three-hundred and fifty (350)to three-hundred and ninety-nine (399) contributions.

• One-thousand euro (€1000) is awarded to a person who has paid between four-hundred (400)to four-hundred and forty-nine (449) contributions.

• One-thousand and fifty euro (€1050) is awarded to a person who has paid between four-hundred and fifty (450)to five-hundred and ninteen (519) contributions.

For those individuals born before 1962, do not qualify for a Contributory Pension due to having less than ten (10) years paid contributions, any contributions paid before the age of eighteen (18) years will be taken into consideration.

As from January 2026, those individuals born on or after 1962, who do not qualify for a Contributory Pension due to having less than twelve (12) years paid contributions, any contributions paid before the age of eighteen (18) years will be taken into consideration.

The Grant is paid once a year. If a person was born after 1^st January in the qualifying year, a pro-rata payment is made for that year.

The Grant will continue to be paid even to persons over seventy five (75) years of age.

• If a person was born:

  • between 1952 and 1955, grant is paid at sixty two (62) years.

  • between 1956 and 1958, grant is paid at sixty three (63) years.

  • between 1959 and 1961, grant is paid at sixty four (64) years.

  • on 1^st January 1962 or after, grant is paid at sixty five(65) years.

• A person who has paid more than fifty (50) Social Security Contributions but does not have the minimum amount of Social Security Contributions paid to qualify for a Contributory Pension.

• A person should be a resident in Malta or in a European Union Country.

Documentation required

• Ensure that your banking details held by the Department of Social Security are updated to receive payments by direct deposit in a bank. The IBAN number should be a local savings or current account, but not a loan account. The indicated account should be in the name of the beneficiary only. Banking details may be updated on mySocialSecurity.

The Contributory Retirement Grant for Non-Pensioners is issued automatically. This occurs when a contributory pension application is rejected by the Department of Social Security, on the basis that a claimant does not have the minimum amount of Social Security Contributions to qualify for a Contributory Pension. However, in those cases where the department does not have details regarding Social Security Contributions paid by a person, then an application needs to be submitted.
