Energy and Water Services

  • Energy and Water Awareness Micro-SMEs Visits

The Energy and Water Agency has been offering an on-going service to Micro-SMEs, i.e. enterprises that employ less than 10 employees, by conducting a short visit at the premises of the enterprise during which, assessment on the electricity and water consumption patterns at the enterprise are carried out.  During these visits, EWA officials provide invaluable information and give professional advice to conserve energy and water.  Examples of such micro-enterprises are pharmacies, child-care centers, hair and beauty salons, restaurants and bars, offices and small retail outlets.
  • English - Photovoltaic (PV) Scheme (Part A)

In order to further encourage the better use of the energy being generated by the country, the Regulator for Energy and Water Water Services (REWS) is administering the following European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funded scheme which aims to encourage the use of photovoltaic systems for residential use that reduce the use of energy, or use renewable sources of energy.

Applicants who have received a grant for a similar system since 2006 shall not be eligible for another grant issued in terms of this scheme.
  • Gaiters/Switching Deviation (Form De)

To cover, deviate or temporarily switch off electricity feeders to allow works on the façade, or development/demolition of a building. Standard fees of €40 and €300 are applicable to install gaiters (€40), switch off a feeder (or part thereof) (€300), or deviate aerial lines (€40) respectively.
  • Guaranteed Service Standards Scheme

Through the Guaranteed Service Standards Scheme, the Water Services Corporation (WSC) pledges to provide a continuous supply of water to its customers. In the eventuality of a disruption in the water supply, the WSC commits itself to restore the supply of water within 48 hours in case of a suspension due to maintenance, and within 72 hours in case of a suspension due to extraordinary events.
  • Heat Pump Water Heater Scheme -2021

The Heat Pump Water Heaters scheme is administered by the Regulator for Energy and Water Services to encourage the use of energy efficient equipment in the domestic sector. This scheme is funded through national funds and applies to private individuals (natural persons) for use in their residential properties, and for organisations that are not carrying out an economic activity.
  • New Water Access Card

For the benefit of agriculture and to improve the quality of the aquifer, New Water will be supplied free of charge, up to a maximum of 2,500,000 litres per half-hectare.

  • Pannelli Bla Bejt

Pannelli bla Bejt is a community solar scheme run by the Water Services Corporation (WSC). It allows households to invest in photovoltaic panels installed on WSC infrastructure - covered reservoirs, operational buildings and utility land - and receive a share of the income those panels generate, even if their own home has no roof, no roof access, or sits within a heritage or structurally restricted area.

The scheme is designed as a passive investment: the household contributes the capital, and WSC handles everything else: site preparation, installation, grid connection, maintenance, monitoring and revenue collection. Electricity generated is sold into Malta’s government-backed Feed-In Tariff, and the resulting income is split between the participating household and WSC.

Pannelli bla Bejt extends WSC’s existing renewable-energy programme - already funded through its Green Bond - and opens it up to citizen participation, so that more people can contribute to Malta’s renewable-energy targets regardless of their housing situation. Phase 1 is currently an Expression of Interest; the full scheme will launch in the coming months.

  • Promotion of Energy Audits in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Scheme

This application is for a small or medium sized enterprise in order to apply for a grant for an Energy Audit, conducted under the specific directions given in Government Notice 237 and 238 of 2024.

The Promotion of Energy Audits in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Scheme is divided into 2 options, referred to as Scheme A and Scheme B. Scheme A is eligible to enterprises that are listed under the De Minimis Regulation, whilst Scheme B is for enterprises eligible under the General Block Exemption Regulation.
  • PV Grant Scheme -2020

To further encourage the use of renewable energy equipment in the domestic sector, REWS is launching a new 2020 PV scheme.

This new scheme will follow exactly the same procedures as for the past scheme and private individuals (natural persons) making use of space on their residential properties, and organisations that are not carrying out an economic activity may gain from this scheme.
This new but similar scheme is nationally funded and the budget allocation for this scheme amounts to €3M.

  • Reconnection of Electricity Service (Form REC)

If the electricity supply is suspended for a long period of time, you may be requested to submit this form, endorsed by an authorised provider (refer to the Electrical Installation Regulations - SL423.39) to confirm that your internal electricity system can be reconnected to the national electricity grid.
